Adele says Hello after three years with new album

Adele said “Hello” to fans in a new way on Oct. 23 when she released her first single from her newest album, entitled 25. The full-length album was released not long after the hit single on Nov. 20. The album was much anticipated since her last album, 21, came out more than three years ago. Adele is known for naming her albums after the age in which she draws her inspiration. Now, at 27 years old, she is showing the world her emotions from 25, and they are, for the most part, heart-wrenching. Her new album is somewhat different from 19 and 21. Adele has called it more of a “make-up record” to herself, that was inspired by the time she lost between albums. “My last record was a break up record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make-up record. I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did,” Adele said in a Facebook post on Oct. 21. Though it is drastically different from her previous albums, it does not lack that signature Adele passion. This album was overall really great, but that doesn’t mean that every song on the track list was worth a repeated listen. In fact, some of the songs really blended together, even the really good ones. And while a lot of them evoked strong emotions, it wasn’t as bold as 21, which was disappointing to long-time fans. If you want songs that will mend your broken heart, because if we are being honest, that’s what we all thought the entire record was going to do, then skip to track four, “When We Were Young,” track eight, “Love In The Dark,” or track 10, “All I Ask.” These love-filled ballads are the songs fans were hoping would shine throughout 25. “River Lea” is a song with no real meaning or emotion. It might actually be the only song lacking Adele charm on the entire record due to its annoying repetition. “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” was filled with a sound that was very unlike Adele. It was more of a happy, fun song which shows a different side of the Grammy-winning artist. This album wasn’t the greatest one put out by Adele. In fact, it isn’t really comparable to the boldness of 21. It was missing the vocal strength fans are used to. However, it does have some noteable songs throughout the record that are well-worth the buy. You can purchase the album on iTunes or at Walmart or Target. If you buy the album...

Action, adventure meets the screen

It’s the most wonderful time of the year–a time when holiday blockbusters begin to make an appearance. This year’s movies are sure to be classics, so pack up your family, head to the nearest movie theater and make some unforgettable memories. Spectre, PG-13 Has Bond finally met his match? 007 has always been a fascinating, mysterious character. This generation’s Bond, Daniel Craig, has definitely portrayed this role well. The film opens in a classic 007 style–a beautiful city during an event, a shady character, and Bond who, of course, has a stunning woman in his arms. Then you see the shady character leave the big event and Bond follows. Next thing you know Bond is eavesdropping on the villains’ conversation. Something happens that gives Bond away. Then, BANG! There’s an explosion that hints at the identity of the main antagonist. From there the film leads into the opening credits, along with the new James Bond song, “Writings on the Wall,” which is performed by the very talented English singer, Sam Smith, who doesn’t disappoint. The song fits perfectly with the theme and the story of this 007 movie. The opening credits for Spectre are definitely one of the best parts of this movie. This wasn’t like any other movie that just puts the title of the movie and the big actors name in it. These opening credits are a masterpiece –a movie of their own. It gives you an idea of how the movie will be portrayed. The antagonist of this film is different from the others. In this film you learn that the villain has been watching Bond since childhood. It takes Bond a while to realize who this foe is. This movie is filled with so many twists and turns, and sheds some light on who James Bond is. And if this is Daniel Craig’s last time as the legendary 007, he went out with a bang. The movie once again proves that James Bond is the best spy around, and his movies are some of the best around. Mockingjay Part II (trailer review), PG-13 Tell me where the sign up list is to help District 13 overthrow President Snow. As a huge fan of both the books and the films, I am sad to see that the series is coming to an end. But at the same time I am really excited to see how they will conclude this series. This trailer had me captivated from the beginning to the end. Katniss, who is portrayed by Oscar Winner Jennifer Lawrence, gives a motivational speech that will make fans feel like they can take on the world....

Halo 5 shoots down competition

Halo 5 has become the most successful series on the Xbox One gaming system and seemed to be well anticipated by the gaming world. The Halo series has been breaking and setting its very own sales records and making waves in the gaming community. Halo 5 grossed more than $400 Million within the first week launching the iconic game even further into sales history. According to CNBC.com, “Halo 4 grossed $220 Million within the first 24 hours, and Halo 3, $170 Million within the first 24 hours.” Microsoft has not released any numbers for first day sales of Halo 5, but Gamespot.com speculated that, “Halo 5 has been the most successful Halo launch.” As usual Halo starts where it left off, but this one has kind of a spin to it. Chief, the main character of the popular game, finds himself being the hunted instead of being the hunter. Throughout the series Chief enlists the help of an artificial intelligence program named Cortana. In this particular installation of the series Cortana decides to go rouge, and of course against the rules Chief, goes after her. By going after Cortana Chief is now wanted by the same military unit he previously worked for. Several noticeable changes have been made to the gameplay that may or may not effect how the game is played. Chief now moves with a squad, and when you die, you simply fall to the ground to be revived by one of your team members. Chief’s death in all of the previous Halo installments was simple – he just died and started from the last checkpoint. For the gamer who likes to play multi-player with his or her buddies, this game might not be for you. The only way you can play multi-player on your own system is if you have a paid subscription to Xbox Gold, which is the member status needed to play online gaming. This status must be purchased in order to play multi-player locally. Other than the items mentioned, the gameplay is overall the same, and it is still a worthwhile...

Class prepares students for missions

The Bible says that it is the responsibility of the believers to deliver the Gospel to everybody. But language barriers can sometimes get in the way of witnessing to others. Spanish for Mission Work (SPAP 1340) is a class designed to close the gap between UMHB students and potential Spanish-speaking believers in Christ. “It is our hope that Spanish for Mission Work will link up with missionary programs,” said Gary Smith, Spanish for Mission Work Instructor. The course is designed for those who are interested in missions and also have the desire to learn more about the language and the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. The course will count as an elective credit and will possibly be available in the spring 2016 semester pending administration data results. Basic knowledge of Spanish is recommended, but it will not be required to take the course. The emphasis of the course will be learning various Biblical terms in Spanish, as well as how to deliver the Gospel to a Spanish speaker. The course is new, and those involved are very excited about the possibility of equipping more Spanish-speaking students for the mission field. “The author of the textbook works at Dallas University, and she is very excited to be part of what we are trying to do,” Smith said. UMHB has several mission-centered classes, and Smith is hopeful that the new course will add another successful missionary program to the university’s repertoire. Smith said if students want more information about the course and want to find out how to sign up, they should contact him at gary.smith@umhb.edu, or talk to any of the the other foreign language...

The Bell County Museum comes to life

atural History comes alive in the popular Night at the Museum film, the Bell County Museum came alive on Oct. 23. from 5 to 7 p.m. for parents and children of the Belton and Temple areas. The American Marketing Association hosted the event where more than 600 children and parents enjoyed activities. Members of the association dressed up as different characters, gave out candy, read stories, and helped with games. Participants walked into each room of the museum where they had the chance to interact with various historical figures from Bell County’s past. Each figure briefly explained who they were, and showed the children various artifacts from their story. Some of the historical figures that the children met included: Quannah Parker, a chuck wagon cook, Lewis Hines, an archeologist, and a ghost prisoner. Each figure stamped a passport for the children once they spoke to each one. If a child visited every character and received a certain number of stamps, they received candy. “There were a lot of families coming in. The kids looked like they were having a blast. It was a really good turnout,” sophomore marketing major and door greeter Sara Chivvis said. Children and parents could also have their picture taken at a photo booth, listen to the story of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, visit the ghosts of various historical homes in the area, or participate in a craft. This year was the third consecutive year that the AMA has put on Night At the Museum at the Bell County Museum. “We were approached by the museum three years ago because they had the idea to do this Night At the Museum event, and they wanted to get help from an organization on campus. They came to us as the American Marketing Association and asked us to help them,” sophomore finance major and head planner of the event Skylar Kuretsch said. Although the event was loads of fun for the children and parents, it required a lot of planning. “I started meeting with the museum in August, and I’ve come almost every week to meet with them. It went really well tonight,” Kuretsch said. The AMA students enjoyed being able to get involved with the community through this event. “I just wanted to get to know more people and be a part of AMA,” said freshman marketing major Reagan Scafer who gave candy out at the event. “This seemed like a fun way to get to be a part of the community as well as an on-campus...

Halloween DIY: Costume Edition

Who needs to buy one of those expensive, cheaply-made costumes from a big box store when you can make a DIY costume? As college students, we don’t have much money to spend on Halloween costumes. So, why not make one yourself from clothing articles you already have. Here are some helpful tips for making a costume that is sure to be a hit. Be inspired by your favorite TV shows and movies. Are you a Frozen fan? Then maybe you could dress up as Anna or Elsa. Or do you like Despicable me? Dress like a minion. It is easy and cute. Star Wars fan? Dress like Princess Leia or Darth Vader. For example, if you want to be Leia, find a white dress, make a grey utility belt using gray paper and a Sharpie, and role your hair in Leila’s signature side buns. Go to Walmart Walmart has plenty of character themed t-shirts like Batman or Superman that you could easily add pants or a skirt to creat a one-of-a-kind costume. Make sure you pick a costume you have time to make. It would be a shame to pick a costume that you do not have time to make depending on how close Halloween is. Find a few friends to help Don’t make your costume alone. Grab a few friends and make a night out of it. Look at what you have in your closet Sometimes you can make a costume with what you have already without having to purchase anything. One year I dressed up as Miss America. I used one of my old formal dresses, borrowed a fake crown from my little sister, made a sash from some ribbon lying around, and voila! It’s okay if you can’t sew There are many different ways to make a costume without knowing how to sew. You can even buy fabric glue from a craft store or Walmart at a minimal cost. Be modest You can have a cute costume without sacrificing your modesty. Making your own costume allows you to have control over how low your neckline is or the length of a skirt. Combine costume ideas If you can’t decide between two costumes, combine them. If you’re stuck between dressing up as Hannah Montana or a zombie, be Zombie Hannah Montana. Be Creative Don’t just go with the cookie-cutter costume that is the latest hit this year. Pick something you really want to be, and think outside of the...
