Ballroom dancing back on campus

By Jordan Beechum Contributing Writer

UMHB is bringing the Cru Ballroom Dance club back to campus. While precautions are still taken at UMHB, the university allows the club to use the Mayborn Campus Center.

This is the first time the club has been in the center in nearly 18 months, and organizers say they could not be any happier.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions in the 2020-2021 school year, clubs were only permitted to meet once a month, masks were required, and participants were not able to touch.

Realizing that dancing without any touching would be nearly impossible, the club moved off campus all the way to Chisholm Trail Park Pavilion, ten minutes away.

While dancers met every week, this made it very hard for any newcomers to join. Last year the group started and ended with about 44 members. Dancers say this was because no one knew the club was still happening.

John Mhindu said the reason he did not go was that the “distance was too far.” John did not have a car last year, which made it very hard to travel off-campus.

President Eliza Bearden, believed the shortage of numbers would be temporary as long as there were restrictions. Through all of this, there were still high hopes that the club would get back on track, and this year the club has grown.

Bearden said that there are a “wide variety” of people and groups for everyone to feel welcome.

She also credited the friendships she made and the family-like bond that has grown between the group as the reason she is still here at UMHB.
