Crusader Golf whacks competition

By Sterling Dube

Even with the trying times that the world is going through, the Crusader Athletics Department is not letting up. While most of the teams are training for the challenging season that will start in the spring semester, the Men and Women’s Golf teams have been representing the University well, both on team and individual levels.

At the Women’s Golf Lady Crusader Fall Invitational in Glen Rose on Sept. 29, UMHB placed first place out of three teams. Freshmen marketing major from Houston, Sarah Kmiecik won the tournament with an impressive score of 144. Freshman finance major, Sydney McConnell from Tyler also had a very impressive weekend, coming in only nine strokes behind Kmiecik.

The standings for UMHB were as follows: Jo Tiger finished in fifth with a 156, Annie Hasselbach swooped in at sixth place, Lily Self got seventh place, Leah Tyner placed tenth overall, Zoe Kelton got eleventh, and Jade Ming placed fifteenth. The Women’s Golf team will be back in action at the East Texas Baptist University Invitational, at The Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater on October 12-13th.

Men’s Golf came in second place at The Preview Event in Brownwood from Sept. 21-22.  While the Crusader’s performance was not enough to clinch first place overall, they had amazing performances individually. A freshman from Spring, William Sammons, was the top finisher for the Cru with a 143, and he finished second overall in the event. Freshman business major from Lewisville, Texas, Luke Lowetz placed third overall with an impressive 144. Tied for ninth place were sophomore Kaden Treybig, and Ari Saidana with 149.
